“Take an armful of books from your most interesting friend’s library, stack them next to the must-read selection from your favorite bookseller, add a few blow-your-mind tomes and a pinch of guilty pleasures, and you might have something close to the collection you’ll find in Harbin’s amazing little bookstore. I stop in upon my arrival to assure that I have something special for the visit, and always pick up a title or two for when I return home. I’ve yet to be disappointed.”
-- T. O’Rourke, Professor of Communication Studies, Harbin guest
"I'm an urban intellectual type from New York City, and I've been coming to Harbin once or twice a year since 1977 to recover from the overly cerebral overload of life in the megalopolis-to hike, meditate, soak, stretch, practice taiji on the beautiful decks, and so on. The last thing I was looking for at Harbin was intellectual stimulation, so imagine my surprise one day many years ago when I bothered to look around the tiny bookstore while waiting in line to check in, expecting to find some silly New Age fluff, and instead finding one fascinating tome after another, an array of some of the most sophisticated books on consciousness exploration and the cream of the very hippest contemporary fiction. It was among the smallest bookstores in the country, but inch for inch, I would bet, by far the most interesting. I decided I had to meet the brains behind the store, and that's another story, but now I always check out the store first and get a few books to add intellectual stimulation to the sensorial delights of my Harbin experience."

"Your book collection is exquisite! So well curated! The "best of" my own collection - and then some. I'm a scholar at this stuff and would love to talk!"
-- Farsam, Harbin guest
Our Bookseller Recommends
Our bookseller Linda -- discriminating in her suggestions -- currently recommends a few of her favorites:
The Emperor’s Children, by Claire Messud
“Engaging … The characters take on intriguing nuances as Messud satirizes and challenges perceived notions of culture, class and social mobility. Her vivid, juicy writing ensures an exhilarating read throughout.” – USA Today (A New York Times Book Review Best Book of the Year.)
The Boat, by Nam Le
“Nam Le’s lyricism and emotional urgency lend his portraits enormous visceral power... A remarkable collection." – The New York Times
An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Mood and Madness, by Keay Redfield Jamison
"The most emotionally moving book I've ever read about the emotions." – William Safire, The New York Times Magazine
Valis, by Philip K. Dick
“The fact that what Dick is entertaining us about is reality and madness, time and death, sin and salvation – this has escaped most critics. Nobody notices that we have our own homegrown Borges, and have had him for thirty years.” – Ursula K. LeGuin, New Republic
Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Strout
Winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize, Oliver Kitteridge is a force of nature in a small coastal Maine town. Smart. Strong. Bull-headed, cruel. Admirable, unlikable, likable. So impossibly flawed and achingly human it hurts. Thirteen stories form a fully realized novel. When she's not onstage, we look forward to her return. The book is a page-turner and a joy to read because of her.

and spirituality.

"This
book has grit and stamina - it's clean. Ishvara has written about
his life, not the 'I am born' kind, but one written with courage
and clarity about his living work of Kundalini Yoga and Tantric
yoga, about practicing masters and about his initiation into secret
practices. This is going to blow your mind." -- Wavy Gravy,
activist, clown, author of Something Good for a Change

book provides "snapshots of an alternative way of living"
at the Lake County resort Harbin Hot Springs. Wyne chronicles
the religious, philosophical and psychological trends that took
place in the Harbin community over the last 15 years.
"Take
it for what it is, a sardonic journey down memory lane. One man's
experience in a unique and magical land called Harbin. Simultaneously,
you feel the sadness of a man who has put his heart and soul into
his journey and still feels disconnected, and the hilarity of
knowing that his fixation on other body parts has provided some
comic relief to a serious journey of discovering the real meaning
of life" -- Bunky Cermudjun

Garden
Planet:
The Present Phase Change of the Human Species
by William H. Kötke
Kötkes
new book brilliantly integrates the best contemporary research
into a compelling argument on the inevitable collapse of the consumer
empire. Equally brilliant, however, is the solution
that is offered. The author carefully outlines a new culture based
on self-sufficient eco-villages, a concept that is gathering momentum
and will allow a sustainable transition from the collapse of the
consumer empire.

Opening your Body to Consciousness
by Andrew Yavelow
This is a
practical guide to physical well-being, personal power, and the
abiding peace that so naturally arises when we live in conscious
harmony with the feelings and messages of our bodies. Embodiment

spirit... some as old as human history, some as new as quantum
physics. With its clear, heartfelt, easy-to-read style, Yavelow
takes you on a step-by-step journey beyond any masks of looks
or behavior, into a deeper, healthier, and more profoundly fulfilling
connection with the unique and exquisite essence of who you truly
