Grazing with Purpose: How Sheep Help Care for Harbin’s Land

At Harbin Hot Springs, caring for the land has always been an important part of our connection to this special place. One of the ways we support responsible land management is through an annual sheep grazing program that has been part of our property care for several years.

Once a year, we welcome a managed flock of sheep onto different areas of the Harbin property to help naturally manage grasses, weeds, and other vegetation. The sheep are carefully moved from one location to another, allowing them to graze in targeted areas while supporting the health of our landscape.

This traditional practice, known as targeted grazing, is an environmentally friendly alternative to more intensive vegetation management methods. By reducing excess grasses and weeds, the sheep help lower wildfire fuel loads, return nutrients to the soil, and support the long-term health of the land.

As the sheep travel across Harbin’s many acres, they become temporary caretakers of the landscape and working alongside our land stewardship team to help preserve the beauty and resilience of the property.

What Guests Can Expect

A managed flock of sheep will be present on the grounds for approximately one month a year to assist with sustainable landscaping and fire mitigation efforts. Trained sheepdogs accompany and guide the flock as they move safely between grazing areas.

For the safety and well-being of both our guests and the animals, we kindly ask that you refrain from approaching, feeding, or interacting with the sheep or the sheepdogs. Although the animals are accustomed to their work, minimizing distractions allows them to perform their important role safely and effectively.

During the grazing period, guests may occasionally hear the sheep or the working dogs, including barking as the dogs guide and protect the flock. We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any temporary sleep disturbance this may cause.

Thank you for helping us support this natural and sustainable approach to caring for Harbin’s landscape. We hope you enjoy seeing our four-legged land stewards during your visit.
